Internal Assessment
Internal Assessment is set and marked by the class teacher.
It can be a test, a school examination or an assignment.
The assessment time, the deadline and all the conditions are spelled out on the assessment’s cover sheet.
Moderation
Internal Assessments are moderated.
Samples of the test, exam or assignment and samples of student work and the class teacher’s marking schedule are checked by outside experts.
A school must keep internal assessment up to the national standards.
The school’s systems for assessing student work are regularly checked by NZQA.
Second chances
Students can have more than one attempt at an internal assessment.
This is not always available.
Availability and the number of attempts depends on;
The school policy.
The nature of the assignment.
The type of Unit being studied.
There are two types of second attempts.
Re-submission
If students are close to a pass, they can ‘improve’ their work.
Teachers cannot give students the answer or tell them exactly how to ‘improve’ the work.
They can point out the areas of weakness.
Re-sit
Students can be assessed again using a new and different test, exam or assignment.
